Question for the Sword Workshop

Hi there, I'm Robin from Devyani Dance Company. I'm excited about taking the sword workshop at Cues and Tattoos, but it just dawned on me that getting my sword from Alabama to Seattle via the airlines won't be easy or inexpensive. Is there any chance some wonderful person who's also going to be there might have an extra one i can borrow for the class? Or, lacking that, I wonder if I could ship it somewhere to pick up and then ship it back home? Thanks for any suggestions....

Worse comes to worse, you could always fed ex it to the hotel you will be at. But I am sure someone will have an extra one. If not, what time/day is this workshop. I could bring mine up for you to use...just make sure to play nice with it. :)

You can pack it in the cargo area of the plane. Most dancers I know who travel by plane get a gun case at a sports supply shop, and it works great.

      Agreed!

That's what we did when we traveled to TF with our swords a couple of years ago. We even put a little picture/article inside with us dancing with our swords explaining that they were props. The TSA got a real kick out of it ;)

Devon, thanks so much for the offer. Are you taking any of the workshops? I wouldn't dream of asking you to bring your sword if you weren't already going to be there. Shay and Molly, thanks so much for your suggestions too. I thought seriously about FedEx'ing it....but taking it on the flight is definitely out. I've discovered that when flying now you have to pay for EVERY BAG you check. Coming and going. $15 for the first, $25 for anything after that. And ridiculously more if the bag is oversized, which a gun case would be. I'll already be heavy with costuming so I'm not willing to pay more to get the sword there and back home than I am to take the class. Wink.....but thank you ladies so much for the suggestions. I'm thinking that even if I don't have the sword there, I can probably just take great notes and work it out when I get home....

          Hi Robin,
You can use my sword, I think it's different than what Sabine uses but still probably useful.
I will not be using at all over the weekend.
Why don't you e-mail me at hipnotica@comcast.net to arrange.

Ah. I am glad I saw this. I had a couple questions about this too. I will have two swords, wasn't sure if we were working with one or two.
I have very very minimal experience with a sword. Very little. Is there a better outfit than another to wear when practicing? Skirt of pants?
              I think that's it. Thanks... :)

We'll only need 1 sword each for this workshop. Pants are probably best for you, just because the fewer things there are to get in the way the better. Also, if you wear pants it will help me to see what your feet and knees are doing, and that's a good thing. (Later of course you want to practice with skirts. When you turn with a skirt while doing any sword manipulations there are ways you can move to keep from hooking yourself, and other things that will practically guarantee that you'll make a hole in your own costume.)

I do recommend that everyone wear a cotton head scarf to aid in balancing and to help cushion the sword so they don't get a headache--unlike a performance situation, for a workshop it's a long time to balance a heavy sword and it starts to hurt after a while. Also, it will be safer for those around you if we do something that might otherwise make the sword slip on a bare head. The time to practice bare-head balance is on your own time.

                Any other pre-sword workshop q's?
